What's the most famous movie you've never seen?
Submitted by Mike.
The Godfather (and all of its sequels). People whose opinions I respect tell me that it's great, so I have no doubt. It's just never seemed that interesting to me . . . no idea why.
J, friends and I went to see "Casino Royale" last night, which was really quite good. A few thoughts:
1. Daniel Craig's Bond is a far more athletic hero than previous Bonds - I can't imagine Brosnan or Moore chasing down the bad guys with such stamina.
2. This Bond relies less on cool gadgets, and more on strength and tenacity. He's elegant, natch, but he's also no priss.
3. There was very little of the traditional female exploitation that we've come to expect from the franchise. The most skin you see on the love interest is a low-cut dress. Even the 'Bond driving over the curvy lady's boobs' opener that usually sets the tone for the series was scrapped. (On the contrary, Bond is the one that gets naked.)
4. Daniel Craig is amazing looking.
5. This was a far less campy Bond than usual, a refreshing change of pace.
J and I went to see 'Borat' this weekend. My headline sums up my feelings on it.
Interestingly enough, though, I didn't find it significantly more offensive than what's aired on network TV (nudity aside): shows like "South Park" and "Family Guy" get away with crass, racist, homophobic and sexist material, all in the name of humor, without an R rating.
Is the difference that TV is broken into more digestible chunks, complete with commercial breaks?
Is it the concentration of offenses that makes "Borat" so bad?
I'd love to hear feedback from anyone that saw it.
The new deluxe edition of Pretty in Pink has been released on DVD for all us 80's kids.
While billed as the "Everything's Duckie" edition, the bonus features explore, but fail to show, the original ending of the movie where Andie ends up with sweet, devoted Duckie, rather than I-consistently-fail-to-stick-up-for-you-in-front-of-my-asshole-friends-and-pretty-much-treat-you-like-crap-throughout-the-movie Blane. (You can see where this Molly wannabe's loyalites are.)
Ohmygod, I'm still like totally going to buy it, ya know?
Walker and I caught The Illusionist this weekend and were blown away. It's amazingly good for a movie that forces you to suspend disbelief on multiple levels: it's a period piece about magic.
(Note: I would pay to watch Ed Norton eat crackers, but I assure you, this was outstanding.)
We also saw Brick, which was partially inaudible, oddly paced and somewhat confusing, but still satisfying. It's a bit of a testament to 'just say no,' but manages to drive the message without being preachy or judgmental.
Plus that kid from "Third Rock from the Sun" turned out to be kind of hot. Who knew?
So, how did you do with that weekend goal? No goal? What did you do this weekend?
- Scraped the top of my big toe on the bottom of the pool. Ouch.
- Watched an amazing Copolla movie, The Conversation.
- Did one million loads of laundry in preparation for Maine.
- Talked w my BFF, who gave me great career and dating advice.
- Hung out w some friends.
- Slept and slept and slept and slept.
Walker and I caught Miami Vice last night. I liked it much more than I wanted to. While the plot is ridden with holes, and Miami fails to be important to the story, it was visually amazing and sultry.
A few quick observations:
> digital video rocks
> the movie pays good homage to the TV show without parodying it
> unlike the TV show, three quarters of the film takes place outside of the city
> colin ferrell needs to shave that gawd-awful moustache
