Lise and I are going to pick potatoes on Saturday. That's right, you heard me, potato picking.
Lise is very into food harvesting: berry picking, canning, pickling, the whole shebang. I tell her that it's time to leave the 19th century; she tells me that she's giving me practical skills for when the revolution comes.
I told my super-analytical scientist dad about this last night, and was amazed to listen to the man wax rhapsodic about fresh potatoes. "Oh my. Have you ever had a potato right out of the ground, fresh? Put some butter on it, and it's the tastiest thing that you will ever eat. Period." The scientist kicked back in shortly thereafter, when he explained to me how the sugars in the potato turn to starches.
Who knew pops was so passionate about the spud?
In other news, I went to my first chiropractor appointment today to see what kind of damage the Great Fall of 2006 had inflicted upon me. While the doctor (yep) and I agreed that I'm completely out of alignment, he is concerned that I may have also cracked my pelvis. Yikes! If this is indeed the case, he's going to refer me to an orthopedist. In the meantime, he took a bunch of x-rays, and showed me some things I can do to stretch out my shoulders.
I took a pretty nasty tumble on Friday night (slipped on the wet bathroom floor, sadly sober) and am completely out of alignment. So I've made my first ever appointment with a chiropractor for tomorrow afternoon.
Having never been, I emailed my posse to see what to expect. The best response came courtesy of Mrs. Clark Kent, that funny lass:
They will lay you down on a bed like thing, face down, and rotate your body, back, and hips till you pop in lots of different places, not just your back. Sometimes they do your legs too, just to get hip and lower back rotation. Sometimes they also poke you on along your back, kind of like acupuncture, but with their finger. You can also ask for special exercises too for home. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a happy ending.
One more reason to do yoga: it helps manage depression.
I've been studying ashtanga and hatha for about six months now, and I can't express how much better I feel after a practice session. There is something about breathing deeply, stretching, and learning to listen to your body that is good for the spirit.
